One of the questions I get asked most often is can I make your wassail into an alcoholic drink? So I spent some time developing a wassail cocktail!
Before wassail was a drink, it was a salutation between drinking buddies. In the European Middle Ages, "Waes heel!" was a toast meaning "be well" or "have good health." They would raise of glass of their warm mulled cider, share a toast to their good health and then imbibe the warm, spiced wassail.
Wassail is meant to be shared around the punch bowl, and who doesn't like a nip of something extra on a cold windy night? Here's my Wassail Cocktail recipe:
Wassail Cocktail
Ingredients:
- 1 oz. Old World Wassail
- 2 oz. brandy
- 3 dashes Angostura bitters
- 1 cinnamon stick, for garnish
Directions:
- Add wassail, brandy, lemon juice and bitters to a cocktail shaker.
- Add ice to cocktail shaker and shake to mix.
- Pour cocktail over ice. Garnish with a cinnamon stick.
